The season of Advent consists of four Sundays before Christmas, and all the days between. With its short sunlight hours and a lot of darkness, Advent reminds us of the verses in the first chapter of John: “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” This year has shown us some darkness – and we have been separated from each other physically so much. My prayer is that we can share our stories of light in the darkness with each other, as we wait for the coming of Christ, by creating our own booklet of devotional readings that we can then read together.
Here’s how it will work:
•     You choose a scripture (below) that speaks to you. It might be a favorite verse, or a favorite part of the story of Jesus’ coming into the world. Sign up for your verse by clicking the circle to the right of the scripture reference. Then fill in your first name, last name, and email address and click the Select button. When you choose a passage, it will no longer show here (so each person will have a unique scripture passage).
•     Read the passage and ponder what it means to you. Do you remember a time in your life when this passage was especially meaningful? Is there a story or a thought about the passage that you’d like to share with your fellow Faith members? You are welcome to choose a verse or two from within a longer passage if you’d like.
•     WRITE or DRAW a reflection on that passage. This can be as short as a few sentences, or as long as 4 or 5 paragraphs. If you prefer to express yourself through art, we welcome that! If you want to send a photo to illustrate your words, you are welcome to do that, as well! (for instance, if I wrote about my childhood Christmas pageant, I might include a picture in my angel costume).
•     EMAIL your words and/or pictures to Edye at email@example.com by November 1. The worship committee and I will be collecting and assembling them into both print and electronic formats during November. They will be available before the first Sunday of Advent – Nov 29.
Thank you for sharing your gifts with the family of Faith this Advent!
